Today we went out with our guide on two trips, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, to view the wildlife on the canals.
Out on the canals |
Over the two trips we saw so much wildlife including Toucans, Sloths, Monkeys and iguanas.
Iguana |
Caiman (like a crocodile!) |
Howler monkey |
Toucan |
Our guide and the boat driver were great spotters and would see things from miles away - sometimes even when they were pointing things out it took a while to see what we were looking at as some things, like the caimans and iguanas, are so well camouflaged. The guide gave us lots of interesting facts about the birds and animals that we were looking at - for example, did you know that sloths sleep for 16 hours and only come down from the tree to have their once weekly pooh? No me neither... And can you believe we found one doing just that!

We were very lucky with the weather today - it rains everyday in Tortuguero, but most of the time it is short but torrential. On our morning visit we were fine until right at the end of the trip when the clouds opened and it poured down - we managed to get our waterproof ponchos on (yes it is as stylish as it sounds) but it rained hard for about 5 mins with us all cowering in the boat in our waterproof ensembles - I peeked out of my hood to look at Peter who seemed to be fully under his poncho (I couldn't even see his head) but he still managed to get soaked! When we got back to the room he stripped off all his wet clothes and the only thing he left on was his socks as everything else was soaked (even his pants!).
We have loved Tortuguero - it is probably one of the best places we have ever been.
